1883 Mint Set with Gold

The 1883 Mint Set stands out for two reasons. The first is the presence of three Nickel five cent pieces. The final Shield Nickel is joined by both varieties of the new "V" or Liberty Nickel; both with and without "Cents." The second, is the 1883-S Morgan Dollar - a major condition rarity. As is seen often on Morgan Dollars, it is a common date in circulated grades, then escalates rapidly in Mint State. Of course, the Quarter and Half are low mintage issues, and the humble Three Cent Nickel is also scarce this year. There are a lot of gold issues this year, and their inclusion doubles the size of the set to 24 coins. Rarest among them is the 1883-O Eagle, whose mintage of 800 places it among the rarest of this already tough series. Another tough coin is the 1883-CC Half Eagle, and to date, only one coin has been graded above MS61. The remaining "CC" gold (the Eagle and Double Eagle) are both nearly impossible in even moderate MS grades.
