Lovely milk chocolate brown over lustrous and glossy surfaces. Fewer and much less distracting striations than usually seen.

1787 Fugio STATES UNI, 4 Cinq XF45BN PCGS #883

CAC approved. What a nice XF45. Choice glossy brown surfaces with none of the often seen planchet fissures. Well and evenly struck and totally attractive. N-8X variety and likely from the Bank of America hoard.

'1787' 1/2 P Machin's Mills XF45BN PCGS #469

1798 $1 Knob 9 VF25 PCGS #6875

B-5 variety. A famous rarity (R-6) nearly always seen with a large bisecting die break on the reverse. This one of an earlier die state with the crack just starting. Ex American Numismatic Rarities March 14, 2006 Lot 1015 @ $7500

1798 10C Large 8 XF45 PCGS #38753

CAC approved. A sensational XF45 with a superb strike from fresh dies that also left semi-prooflike fields. Wonderful color and eye appeal. Deserved a gold sticker. JR-4 die variety.

CAC approved. Superb toning over pristine surfaces. O-115a variety.

1807 50C Draped Bust XF45 PCGS #6079

1808 $2.50 N1 PCGS #7660

A space filler.

1809/8 $5 XF45 PCGS #8104

CAC approved. Wow what a gorgeous example of this scarce early date half eagle. Well struck, problem-free, lustrous and totally original with wonderful rose gold toning from long-time storage in a leather coin purse.

1812 1C Small Date XF45BN PCGS #1561

CAC approved. An unusually choice coin for this difficult type, nearly flawless and well struck on a choice glossy planchet with rich deep chocolate toning. At the time of purchase this is the only 1812 Small date CAC has approved in this grade with a total of only seven XF45s for the entire series.

1828 1/2C 12 Stars XF45BN PCGS #1150

CAC approved. A very choice early copper with sharp details and trouble free glossy chocolate color. Twelve stars -- a very curious variety; apparently the die cutter couldn't count!

1830 H10C XF45 PCGS #38640

CAC approved. Mega choice XF. Sharper and prettier than photos suggest, it's a mystery it didn't grade higher. LM-3 variety.

1830 $2.50 XF45 PCGS #7670

CAC approved. A choice original example in a very tough grade to find.

1839 50C Reeded Edge Capped Bust, Large Letters XF45 PCGS #6179

CAC approved. A choice totally original XF45 well struck with very clean surfaces and rims and wonderful original color. They all should look like this. GR-5 variety.

1839 $1 J-104 Restrike PR50 PCGS #11446

CAC approved. Latest research shows that this coin is actually an Original, not a Restrike as PCGS put on the holder. It is also very likely that it is not a proof either. A lovely barely circulated specimen with attractive lilac toning and virtually perfect surfaces. A place holder until I can obtain a 45 CAC example. (There is one out there.)

1839/8 $10 Type of 1838 XF45 PCGS #8576

Sharp and flashy.

1851 $1 MS62 PCGS #6939

A "hole filler" until a nice example of my target grade XF45 appears. This is the most wholesome example of this date I've seen since I started this set.

CAC approved. A choice and attractive XF coin with choice surfaces and pleasing original gray toning.

1858 $1 PR62 PCGS #7001

Surprisingly ice for a 62 with strong mirrors and a great look.

1869 $1 XF45 PCGS #6962

CAC approved. This is a really choice XF45, arguably AU50, with lively surfaces toned in light gray with iridescent blue around the peripheries. A good amount of cartwheel luster remains. I paid a huge premium but I think it was worth it.

1871-CC $1 XF40 PCGS #6967

A really choice XF40, lightly toned and problem free. Nicer than a PCGS XF45 I was offered the same day I bought this at $5000 more. Several dealers I showed it to suggested submitting it to PCGS for grade review, thinking it should be XF45. No such luck.

1872-CC $1 XF45 PCGS #6969

CAC approved. A choice and pretty example of this very difficult date. Well struck with rich original toning over glassy fields and well struck devices.

1873-S 25C Arrows XF45 PCGS #5493

CAC approved. This must be one of the most beautiful XF45's in the World. Superb original toning in every pastel you can think of over choice surfaces that still have plenty of cartwheel mint luster. It cost twice the PCGS Current Value amount and well worth it.

1874 10C Arrows XF45 PCGS #4668

CAC approved. Sharp with considerable frosty mint luster under light silvery gray toning.

1876 T$1 XF45 PCGS #7041

LOST OR STOLEN It took me a long time to find an XF45 that met my standards. This is a choice original example with vibrant color and a lot of life.

1787 Vermont BRITANNIA XF45BN PCGS #554

CAC approved. My only purchase in the Heritage 2015 ANA auction, for my PCGS/CAC XF45 Early American Coins and Tokens Design Set. I really liked this coin in lot viewing. Just bought in the online only section, supposed to be for coins valued under $1000. Ha ha, if only . . . . Cost me close to $1000 over what I thought it would after a bidding war. By far a new record for an XF45 at auction. Why is there always someone else who also has to have one of my I Gotta Have It coins? The following from PCGS Coin Facts: Ron Guth: The 1787 BRITTANIA reverse Vermont Copper is one of the more unusual varieties in the series. At first glance, this appears to be an unlikely muling of a Vermont obverse die with a reverse of a British Halfpenny. In reality, this is what is known as an evasion piece, which is a polite way of saying it was a counterfeit coin meant to be a copy of a British Halfpenny. This one was made in America to be used in America. Despite the legends on the obverse, the bust mimicked King George closely enough to pass a cursory examination. At the time this piece circulated, many of the copper coins used by Americans were evasions, out-and-out counterfeits, or a panoply of state coppers. American colonists were so desperate for coins that they accepted these often underweight coppers out of necessity. Only one variety (Ryder 13) comprises the entire population of the BRITANNIA reverse. Like most Vermont Coppers, this variety is hard to find in high grade or on problem-free planchets. Later states of the die show a very indistinct reverse, thus grading must be based primarily on the obverse. Uncirculated examples are exceedingly rare.

1849-D G$1 XF45 PCGS #7507

CAC approved. Rare U.S. gold coin expert Douglas Winter described this example: Variety 1-A. The 1849-D is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar made at the new Dahlonega mint. It is by far the most available gold dollar struck at this facility and it is plentiful in circulated grades although only 10% of the coins graded EF and AU are “CAC quality.” This lustrous piece has the body and appearance of an AU50 to AU53. It is well made and original with some luster and pleasing natural green-gold color. A bit of planchet roughness at the inner left obverse is mint-made and does not detract from the excellent overall eye appeal. The last PCGS EF45 with CAC approval to sell at auction was this exact coin which brought $2,056 as Heritage 2013 ANA: 4934. This is the best available quality at a reasonable price and it is desirable as such. CAC has approved four in this grade with 25 higher.
