From 1909-1912, Germany issued a 25 Pfennig denomination. Essentially a quarter of a Mark, the 25 Pfennig was an odd fit between the Nickel 20 Pfennig and the silver 1/2 Mark, both of which were established denominations. As a result, the 25 Pfennig was short-lived and was discontinued after 1912. In general, Proofs are quite scarce. They come in a variety of finishes, ranging from uniformly satiny to wonderful black-and-white cameos. Often, only the field are brilliant while the design elements and outer borders are frosted. The key date in this series is the 1909-J, which is rare as a business strike and very rare as a Proof.
