The Three Cent Silver piece made its debut this year, the first new non-gold denomination since 1796. They are not scarce. However the 1851 Silver Dollar is tough, with a small mintage of only 1300 coins. Due to the high price of silver, nearly all the mint's output of dollar coins this year was struck in gold. The 1851-O Quarter is a condition rarity, with only one piece graded higher than MS-62 by PCGS. 1851 gold coinage would continue a pattern begun the previous year. The lower denomination coins ($1 through $5) struck at the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints are all tough, and the higher denomination coins ($10 and $20) struck in New Orleans would be the keys to the set. Nearly all the gold coins struck in Philadelphia during the early and mid 1850s are fairly common for the issue.
