The 1798 over 7 13 Star Reverse Dime is a rare variety with less than thirty specimens believed known. This is the rarest of all the 1798 Dime varieties. Most of the known specimens are in grades of Very Fine or lower. The finest example known is currently in the D. Brent Pogue Collection and is graded by PCGS as MS-63. Currently only two other Mint State specimens are believed to exist.

I currently have records of under 120 auction appearances of the 1798 over 7 13 Star Reverse Dime dating back to the 1880’s. Before the 1960’s I have only discovered two auction appearances of this variety graded Uncirculated: The Henry Chapman 1912 Sale of the George H. Earle Collection, lot 3131 and the Thomas Elder September 14 1934 Sale, lot 1253.

The same Obverse die was also paired with a 16 Stars Reverse, but that variety is not as rare as the 13 Star Reverse specimens.
