The Small 8 variety of 1798 is substantially more rare than the 1798 Large 8 but is generally unappreciated as such. Most pricing guides even go so far as to price this variety lower than the Large 8 variety; it should be valued higher in all grades. Mint state specimens are very rare and gems are vitrually unobtainable.
