Most of the total mintage of 3,327 for 1804 was undoubtedly this variety. Walter Breen, in his quarter eagle monograph, speculates that possibly 1,003 of the 3,327 were the 13 Stars variety and 2,324 were the 14 Star variety. This breakdown is highly unlikely because the difference in rarity of the two varieties is far greater than such a breakdown would indicate. Basing a guess on the relative rarity of the two varieties, and also on the rarity of the 1796 With Stars and 1797 which have mintages of just over 400, I would estimate that the mintage of the 1804 14 Star variety was at least 3,000 of the 3,237 total mintage for the year. It is interesting to note that the reverse die for this variety was also used on the 1804 dime with 14 Star reverse. A small number of choice examples exist including the pieces in the February, 1974 Stack's Sale and the 1975 ANA Sale conducted by Superior.
