The 1809 Classic Head Half Cent, Circle in 0, C-4

In 1809, the United States Mint produced five times as many half cents as it did 1809 Classic Head Large Cents (BN #1546) — perhaps because the Mint had extra planchets on hand to mark the debut of the new design. Six varieties are known for this date: four struck with "perfect date" dies and two featuring blundered dates.

The C-4 "Circle in 0" variety (BN #35230) is likely chronologically the first die marriage struck for the year. Its obverse die (Obverse 1) displays a large "0" date punch struck over a smaller "0," with the underdigit clearly visible inside the loop of the primary digit. Another distinguishing feature of this variety is a long, curved line cutting across Liberty's neck and hair. The reverse die (Reverse A) shows a wide gap between OF and AMERICA, with the tip of the top leaf pointing toward the bottom of the O.

A Superb Gem example of the C-4 boasts a notable duPont–Missouri Cabinet–Pogue provenance and realized $105,750 in 2017.
