1820 1C Large Date, BN MS64BN Certification #07225267, PCGS #1615
Owner's Comments
N-13, R.1 Notice the dark and deep copper toning on this attractive, large date variety. I have read that a mottled appearance is commonplace on coins attributed to the now famous Randall Hoard. As the story is told, maybe as many as ten thousand uncirculated coronet cents were buried in a small wooden keg, perhaps decades before the Civil War, discovered only after the war. With this, I am attempting to compile a run of Randall Hoard dates, 1816, 1817, 1818, 1819, and 1820 - all in PCGS Generation-1 rattler holders. According to Q. David Bowers' chapter on the subject, the most frequently encountered examples attributed to the hoard were dated 1818, (N-10) and 1820, (N-13). The population report supports that claim.
