The 1820 Proof Quarter Dollar is an extremely rare coin. At least four examples have been identified, though additional old auction appearances hint at more. The Smithsonian example is off the market (presumably forever), leaving only three examples for collectors. Curiously, three different die varieties comprise the four known examples. Confusing the issue further is the existence of one-sided Proofs that show a reflective obverse and a frosty reverse. As a result, certification is imperative.
The record auction price for this date was achieved in 2005, when Heritage sold an NGC PR67 example (illustrated above) for $218,500.
