1820 50C Curl Base 2, Small Date AU50 PCGS #6121

Owner's Comments

CACG green sticker. O.103 (Obv 3 and Rev C), R1 (Common, >1,000 extant). CAC data 6/20/2024: (36 total graded, 2 on grade, 20 higher). Obverse shows small date with curled base 2 while reverse shows base of D much lower than base of E. 1820 dated half dollars are grouped into broad categories by the type of 2 used to punch the numbers in the date. The basic distinction is the curl base or square base of the 2. The square base 2 is further subdivided into knobbed top or no knob at the top. The 1820 dated half dollar has the third lowest yearly mintage of all Turban Head (capped bust) half dollars. Because of that, it commands a premium over most years.
