1823/2 10C Small Es XF40 Certification #43369565, PCGS #4498
Expert Comments
Ron Guth
All 1823 Dimes are overdates that show a clear 3 over an underlying 2. On the reverses of 1823/2 Dimes, the E's in the legends will be either larger or smaller than the adjacent lettering. Only one distinct die variety makes up the entire Small E's population.
In 1984, Davis et al cited the Bareford MS67 as the finest example known to them. The best examples certified by PCGS are only MS65, and none of those is the Bareford example. The D. Brent Pogue example was PCGS MS65.
