The Holy Grail. Uber rare, this 1823/2 Capped Bust Quarter is an astronomical PCGS R-8.8 rarity with a microscopic ~ 31 known survivors. This is the 'second' 1823/2 Quarter in the D.T. Cabinet. Provenance is from the collection of the late William Alonzo Rinehart IV. Its important to note that while Mr. Rinehart appreciated highly graded coins, he was 'old school' and based his collecting on the 'soul & history' of the coin, regardless of the grade. My goal as a numismatist is to trace the path Mr. Rinehart so ably forged. He was the essence of a true classic collector and we are deeply honored to feature one of his coins in the D.T. Cabinet

According to Steve Tompkins' recent reference, 31 examples of this famous rarity are known. I'd guess there are a few low-grade ones yet to be discovered. The finest seen is a gem Proof with a pedigree tracing all the way back to Levick. Two Mint States are next, followed by two AU's (one from Norweb 1538) and four XF's, including Eliasberg 1386. More than half of the known specimens grade VG or lower.
