The 1823 Half Dollar is a common date in the Capped Bust series thanks to a rather hefty mintage of nearly 1.7 million coins.  This date is available in a full range of grades and can be found with relative ease.  Variety specialists focus on the date, where three major variants are found: Broken 3, Patched 4, and Ugly 3 (plus the Normal 3).  On these varieties, the 3 of the date appears deformed because of a faulty punch and/or repairs made to it.  In addition to the these major varieties, specialists have identified thirteen different die varieties, as well as some interesting die states.

Circulated examples of the 1823 Half Dollar are very common.  Even Mint State examples are readily available, usually in MS62 and MS63, and less frequently in MS64.  Gem examples are very rare and none are known above MS66.  Virtually all of the top-condition 1823 Half Dollars feature impressive color and eye appeal.
