1839 1C Type of 1840, BN MS64BN Certification #33028604, PCGS #1817
Owner's Comments
Here is the 1839 head of 1840--all coined from one die pair (N-8) --- and only 200,000 minted. The most obvious "new" transitional features are that the bust is smaller, the hair under the coronet is braided, there is no hair-curl in front of the ear, and there is a prominent forelock of hair (also found on the Booby Head). Furthermore, the bottom hair curl above the date and below the bust is more extensive, and the bust itself is tilted to the left (as a result the coronet points to star 5 and not 6). This is the first year of the Braided Hair Petite Head design (1839-1843), and the "start" coin for the Braided Hair large cent series (1839-1857). Deep lavender/blue tones with phenomenal luster. Very tough to find in MS64 or better, especially when CAC certified.

The 1839 Type of 1840 Large Cent seems to be a little undervalued as PCGS has a graded a total of about 200 examples more or less in all grades and designations combined. In Gem condition or better they become very scarce as few examples have been confirmed. Anything grading MS65 or higher is considered rare, especially with any traces of red remaining.
