Quickfinder Notes: The Small Date variety is distinguished by the PLAIN ending to the crossbar on the 4. The Medium Date variety has larger numerals and the crossbar of the 4 ends in a CROSSLET. The Small Date is about two and a half times scarcer than the Medium Date. See coin #6241 for the extremely rare 1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1839.PCGS #
