1846 $5 Large Date MS62 Certification #30384325, PCGS #8226

Expert Comments

David Akers (1975/88)

The 1846 is moderately rare in all grades and generally available only in VF to AU condition. Strictly uncirculated examples are rare, just as rare as those of 1844 and 1845. Both small Small Date and Large Date varieties exist, the Small Date being the rarer of the two.

Gordon Wrubel

QuickFinder Notes: The Large Date uses much larger date punches that nearly fill the space between the truncation and the rim. The date is spaced 1 846. The 6 has a ROUNDED back whereas the Small Date 6 has a straighter back. The Large Date is much more common than the Small Date by a factor about 9 to 1. The pop report as of September 2013 shows several low Mint State examples but only one piece grading MS-63. At least 4 proofs from the Large Date die have been reported.
