1871 3CN MS66 Certification #19705972, PCGS #3737
Owner's Comments
CAC 0596 (Regency XVI, February 2016, Lot #85) “Bright and satiny with a hint of peach gold iridescence on both sides. The strike is sharp and this is a scarce issue with a mintage of only 604,000 pieces. Gems like this are downright sparse, and finer examples are quite difficult to obtain at any price. There is a minor planchet streak on the upper reverse, as made at the Mint. PCGS 47, NGC 18, CAC 13. Of those noted at PCGS only four have the + grade finer, and the top example they’ve seen is a single MS67. The CoinFacts website estimates this date and grade at $1,475.00 which seems about right given the quality and rarity of this date.”

In 1871, the mintage of the Three-Cent Nickel dropped below 1 million coins for the first time, to a total of 604,000. Despite the drop in mintage, the 1871 remains a relatively common coin. In circulkated grades, the 1871 is priced similarly to all dates between 1865 and 1875; in Mint State, it commands a small premium.
The 1871 Three-Cent Nickel can be found without too much difficulty in MS-63 to MS-65 condition. In MS-66, this date becomes quite scarce, and only one example has been graded MS67 by PCGS.
This date usually comes with a good strike and the luster is most likely to be frosty rather than prooflike.
