The circulation strike date position is slightly further left than on the 1872 proofs, which is fortunate because this gleaming, boldly prooflike example might easily have passed for a proof in years prior to publication of the John Dannreuther's two-volume United States Proof Coins -- Gold reference. As it is, designated prooflike examples are even scarcer than the 14 to 16 known proofs. The fields on this orange-gold coin are mirrorlike and provide strong contrast with the sharply struck, richly frosted devices. Light field abrasions dictate the MS62 Prooflike grade.
