1872 $3, PL MS62PL Certification #49992401, PCGS #87994

Owner's Comments

PL a very flashy coin 1872 $3 MS62 Prooflike PCGS. The circulation strike date position is slightly further left than on the 1872 proofs, which is fortunate because this gleaming, boldly prooflike example might easily have passed for a proof in years prior to publication of the John Dannreuther's two-volume United States Proof Coins -- Gold reference. As it is, designated prooflike examples are even scarcer than the 14 to 16 known proofs. The fields on this orange-gold coin are mirrorlike and provide strong contrast with the sharply struck, richly frosted devices. Light field abrasions dictate the MS62 Prooflike grade. Population: 2 in 62 Prooflike, 1 finer (9/24).
