Owner's Comments
A richly original Gem whose appeal is founded upon exceptional surface preservation and deeply matured cabinet patina. Unlike the brilliant, frosty examples often encountered for this Philadelphia issue, the present specimen offers a more subdued aesthetic, its satiny luster residing beneath decades of natural oxidation that has produced an even blanket of warm golden-brown color. The obverse is evenly toned in shades of olive-gold, bronze, and light chestnut, with subtle charcoal accents gathering near the borders and protected recesses. The patina is uniform yet transparent, allowing the underlying design to remain fully appreciable while imparting an unmistakably original appearance. Similar coloration extends across the reverse, where warm amber and golden hues blanket the fields and devices in harmonious fashion. The continuity of color between both sides suggests long, uninterrupted storage under stable conditions. Strike quality is comfortably above average for the issue. Liberty's hair exhibits pleasing separation through the forehead and above the ear, while the cotton blossoms and leaves retain strong definition. On the reverse, the eagle's breast displays solid feather detail, and the wings, wreath, and legends are crisply rendered. Although not among the most razor-sharp Philadelphia strikes, the overall impression is one of balanced and complete detail. Luster is satiny and somewhat restrained, as expected beneath the extensive original patina. The underlying cartwheel remains evident but is softened by the mature toning, producing a quiet glow rather than a brilliant flash. This subdued character enhances the coin's antique appearance without sacrificing its originality.
