From ANR August 2004 auction which was from Bowers and Merena''''s sale of the Childs Collection, August 1999, Lot 556. The lot description: "It seems like only yesterday that the writer (QDB), then associated with another firm, was meeting with members of the Childs family to review coins that had been collected in the 19th century, including directly from the Mint, and discussing the option of presenting them for sale. Included was this lovely gem 1880 gold dollar, possibly obtained from the Mint, possibly not, but in any event one of the nicest in existence. Sharply struck, lustrous, and with superb eye appeal, this piece will be a highlight in the cabinet of its next owner."

David Akers (1975/88)

A very popular date with a low mintage of only 1,636 pieces. However, this date was rather extensively hoarded and, as a result, it is one of the most common Type III gold dollars in Unc. Many superb quality specimens exist, and actually any specimen short of choice Unc, is very unusual.
