A prime example of PCGS’s inability to execute their main goal of consistency in the coin grading realm. First time submission, the Coin was rejected as “No Number” meaning they didn’t look hard enough to find the date on the coin. The second time around, the grader actually looked at the coin and realized there was a date! Granted, it’s a heck of a lot easier to grade a Mint State Morgan Dollar versus grading a worn out Low Ball coin! Grading Low Ball coins is more tedious, AND you actually have to inspect the coins!! ☹

The mintage of the 1898 Liberty Head Nickel dropped to just over 12 million pieces, a significant decline from the previous year, but still a plentiful mintage for the series. Thus, Mint State examples are easy to obtain, even in Gem condition. The finest example is a solitary PCGS MS67.

Most 1898 Nickels feature a full strike, but occasional example will have a few weak stars.
