A new record for the Liberty Head series was established in 1902, as the mintage hit over 31 million pieces, the largest mintage recorded for any Nickel since the inception of the series in 1866. Thus collectors have the opportunity to purchase hundreds of certified Mint State examples, where the largest cluster appears at the MS64 level. Even Superb examples can be found, though they become very rare in MS67. The finest example certified by PCGS is a single MS67+.
Though the 1902 Nickel usually comes with a full strike, finding one with full stars, no weakness at the rims/denticles, and with a full ear of corn on the reverse is quite a difficult task.
