1913 $10 MS63 Certification #39455615, PCGS #8873

On the 3rd of September 2024 and using my ELIKLIV microscope and Vantage 10X loupe, I examined this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse shows a diagonal mark below the chin, a small mark below and to the left of the chin, 3 light marks to the left of the nose, vertical marks at the rim edge to the left of the nose, a diagonal mark to the left of the eyebrow, diagonal scrape marks on the left side rim edge, dings beside the headdress to the right of the 4th star, mark on the 10th star from the left, marks above the feather to the right of the last star from the left, a small mark in the 1st headdress feather across from the 5th star, horizontal marks, 1 at the mid point and a lighter one at the top of the feather above the "BE" of "LIBERTY", a ding at the bottom of and a mark at the top of the feather above the "R", 4 marks on the feather above the "Y", 2 light vertical marks at the mid point of the last feather at the right side of the ribbon, 3 marks on the nose tip, a long light scratch in the middle of the cheek to the right of the mouth, a ding on the jaw line below the ear, the cheek has light scarring but is relatively clean, a ding on the necks lower front point, a ding on the middle neck above the "9" of the date, several light dings at the rear lower neck above the "3" of the date, small horizontal marks, 1 above each "913" of the date. I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. The Reverse has light scratches below the end leaves of the olive branch, a light long scratch and a vertical long mark below the ""TRUST" and above the olive branch leaves, a diagonal mark and a ding between the 2nd "T" of "TRUST" and the chest, a ding between the "N" of "IN" and the right wing top, a light scratch to the right of the "NI" of "UNITED", 2 dings to the right of the "T" of "UNITED", a ding between the beak and the right wing top, a diagonal scratch between the "O" of "OF", a small ding above the "E", marks on the "OF", diagonal scratches above the "BU", marks between the "M" of "UNUM" and the "CA" of "AMERICA", a diagonal mark between the "M" of "UNUM" and the wing feathers, many mark and light scratches between the wing and the rim edge below the 2nd "A" of "AMERICA", a horizontal mark across the upper neck, a 2 digit horizontal mark across the mid chest and onto the left wing with a parallel mark at that point, a ding at the lower chest just above the right leg, a diagonal mark on the rear left wing feathers above where the tail feathers drop down, a strong vertical mark and a horizontal mark on the feathers of the left leg, a mark on the 2nd "L" of "DOLLAR". I see no toning, spotting, or cloudiness. This is a nice coin but does have a few heavy marks scattered about. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 6 holder used from May 2014 to October 2020.

The 1913 is very similar in overall rarity to the 1910, 1912 and 1915 and it is relatively easy to find in MS-63 or lower grades. Even in MS-64, the issue is available with some regularity. Gems, although certainly rare, show up sufficiently often that obtaining one is not the extraordinarily difficult task that many issues of this series present. A small number of exceptional quality (better than MS-65) examples of this issue are known to exist, including at least two virtually perfect ones.

The 1913 is typicall very sharply struck, and the lustre ranks right up there with the very best in the series. Color varies somewhat but light to medium yellow and greenish gold are the colors most often seen. Some examples also have light rose, orange or coppery highlights. The surfaces have virtually none of the granularity of the 1910 to 1912 Philadelphia Mint issues and can be either fully frosty or somewhat satiny. Top grade examples of the 1913 are among the most attractive of the series.
