1915 $5 MS62 Certification #04387913, PCGS #8530

Seller states: "1915 $5 Indian Head Gold Half Eagle - Strong Luster - Nice eye appeal with strong luster and flash in an OGH! PCGS early generation old green holder "OGH" PCGS MS 62 - SKU-G1734". This auction opened @ 6:10 pm PDT on the 19th of September 2022 with an opening bid of $1040.00. I placed my bid above $1040.00 @ 10:55:57 am PDT on the 20th of September 2022. The auction ended @ 6:10 pm PDT on the 26th of September 2022 and I was the only one who placed a bid that kept the opening bid as the final price. On the 7th of October 2022, I used my Vantage 10X Loupe to examine this coin and describe it thusly. The Obverse has a small dig just at the neck with the neckband, a mark at the nose and nostrils, and a shiny spot at the base of the "I" of "LIBERTY". The Reverse has light marks & 2 heavier marks between the 2 legs, marks between the upper right wing bend & the "N" of "UNITED", 2 marks, 1 inside the "G" of "GOD" & the other just above the "G" 1 mark between the right of the eagle's head and the "AME" of "AMERICA". There are 3 deep scratches on the obverse side of the PCGS holder that I caused by using scissors to cut off the plastic bubble wrap & being in too much of a hurry & careless. This is a nice coin with a good look. This coin is held in a PCGS Generation 3.1 holder used from March of 1993 to September of 1998.

The 1915 is one of the more common issues of the series and is the easiest to locate in gem condition, other than the 1908. There are quite a few gems around as well as a small number of superb, nearly perfect quality examples. Nevertheless, the 1915, like all Indian head half eagles, still must be considered to be rare in MS-64 or higher grade. All Indian Head half eagles are rare in full MS-65 condition making this the rarest gold type of the 20th century by far.

Overall, this is one of the better looking issues of the series, and high grade ones are most often really attractive. The typical 1915 is very sharply struck with very finely granular surfaces, great lustre and superb color, usually rich greenish gold and orange although some coppery or reddish gold specimens also exist.
