The 1925-D Indian Quarter Eagle

Despite the decent mintage, top-tier examples are notoriously tough to find. David W. Akers, once considered of the foremost authorities on United States gold coinage, considered the 1925-D (#7949) the single most difficult issue in the entire series to locate in Gem Mint State (PCGS MS65 or higher).

A perfect storm of production problems plagued the issue:

Unstable Dies: Inconsistent die preparation led to buckling across many planchets.
Soft Strikes: Overall detail was often mushy, and the "D" mintmark was frequently faint or ill-defined.

Despite soft details, the issue typically exhibits outstanding, vibrant mint luster. In terms of technical strike quality and die flaws, a high grade 1925-D's only true peer in the series is the famous key-date 1914-D (#7947).
