1926 Indian Quarter Eagle

The 1926 Philadelphia Indian Quarter Eagle (#7950) represents the 12th issue in Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative recessed-design series, featuring a standard mintage of 446,000 pieces before production of the $2.50 gold denomination permanently ceased in 1929.

It is one of two $2.50 gold coins struck in 1926, alongside the American Sesquicentennial Commemorative Quarter Eagle (#7466), but its considerable attrition rate and the characteristics of its design and distribution make the Indian $2.50 conditionally scarce in PCGS MS66 or finer.

Mint State specimens typically display frosty, highly lustrous surfaces with warm golden hues. Occasionally, examples will exhibit patches of orange-red toning. Top-end pieces rank among the most attractive in the series.

Collecting the 1926 Indian Quarter Eagle

Numismatist David Akers ranked this issue 13th out of 15 for Gem availability in his 1975 analysis, calling it slightly scarcer than the popular 1925-D (#7949), but still easily accessible in lower Mint State grades.

This analysis bears out today after 40 years of PCGS certification.
