A sharply defined and vigorously lustrous Choice Mint State example of this scarce Denver issue. Brilliant silver surfaces dominate both sides, framed by narrow accents of champagne-gold, pale amber, and smoky gray at the margins. Powerful cartwheel luster sweeps across the broad fields, producing pronounced bands of light and shade while imparting a crisp, metallic appearance. Liberty is especially well rendered, with strong separation throughout the forehead waves, central hair, curls above the ear, and trailing locks. The reverse is equally impressive: the eagle exhibits unusually complete feather definition across the neck, breast, and layered wing, complemented by sharply delineated tail feathers, talons, olive branch, and rays. Scattered contact on Liberty’s cheek, neck, and the left obverse field accounts for the MS64 grade, yet no single abrasion overwhelms the design. From a mintage of 1,268,900 pieces, this attractive 1927-D combines the strike and luster of a significantly finer-looking coin with honest, grade-defining contact. This coin has a very different kind of originality from the more visibly toned pieces. Its surfaces remain predominantly brilliant, but not sterile: a thin gold border and faint smoky cast temper the silver without impeding its mint character. Here, originality is expressed mainly through intact frost and undiminished cartwheel luster. The obverse shows exactly why the coin is MS64 rather than MS65. Several fine marks appear in the left field, with additional scattered contact on Liberty’s cheek and neck. They are noticeable under TrueView magnification, particularly because the surfaces are bright and reflective. At normal viewing size—and especially while the luster is moving—they should be considerably less intrusive. Importantly, there is no single deep gouge or concentrated cluster that dominates the portrait. The strike is excellent. Liberty’s hair has abundant internal detail, including the central region that so often lacks full separation. Even the higher curls and trailing locks remain crisp. The reverse is better still: the eagle’s breast feathers are unusually complete, the wing retains its layered texture, and the tail, claws, olive leaves, rock, and rays are all clearly brought up. This may be one of the strongest reverse strikes we have encountered in the set thus far.

According to a notice in the June 1934 issue of The Numismatist (p. 416), collectors could still purchase Uncirculated 1927-D Peace Dollars directly from the U.S. Treasury for "the face value of the coins and an amount sufficient to cover the mail charrges by first-class mail."
