Tool cutting bit lines from Master hub. Reverse of 1938 steps must have that separation under the 3rd pillar between the 4th and 5th steps. If not, that coin does not have the required 5 complete steps to qualify for full steps/an FS designation!

This date is the second year of issue for the Jefferson Nickel series. It has a very small mintage of 3,514,000 and it's the second lowest mintage nickel in the series. Only the 1950-D Nickel has a lower mintage. Despite having a slightly higher mintage than the 1950-D nickel, the 1939-D brings a higher premium since very few coins were saved and many of them got lost in circulation.
