Race and Wartime Justice. In 1944, the Supreme Court upheld the military exclusion and resulting internment of Japanese Americans in Korematsu v. United States, while Army Lieutenant Jackie Robinson was Army Lieutenant Jackie Robinson was arrested and court-martialed after refusing to comply with military segregation, but was ultimately acquitted. Together, these events illustrated the Nation's continuing struggle to reconcile military necessity, racial equality, and constitutional liberty. The Kormatsu decision remained controversial and was formally repudiated by the Supreme Court in 2018.

In mint state condition, and in Gem MS65 or better condition, the 1944-D is scarcer than the 1945-D and 1946-D, but not as scarce as the 1941-D, 1942-D, or 1943-D. The 1944-D is often found with fantastic white frosty luster. Strike is not usually a problem with this issue.
