1968-S Mintage: Circulation strikes: 100,396,004 Proofs: 3,041,506 Designed by: Felix 0. Schlag Composition: 0.75 part copper, 0.25 part nickel Diameter: 21.2 mm Weight: 76.16 grains (5 grams) Edge: Plain Beginning in 1968, the mintmark was moved from the reverse of the coin to the obverse just below the date. All proof coins were minted in San Francisco and bear the “S” mintmark. The mintmark was added to the die by hand and therefore slight differences exist between coins. In addition, this was the first year that the mintmark appeared on the obverse.

The 1968-S Proof Jefferson Nickel was very well struck and finding an example should not be difficult. This issue is very common in about PR65-67 Deep Cameo condition. In PR68 Deep Cameo condition is it a little more challenging to find but it can easily be purchased at a reasonable and affordable price. In PR69 Deep Cameo condition they are scarcer, yet, there are still hundreds of examples available. In PR69 Deep Cameo condition it becomes much more expensive as there is a higher demand than there are coins available.
