The 2011-W Proof Gold Buffalos were first offered by the U.S. Mint on May 19, 2011, at a price of $1,760 each. There waere no maximum mintages announced by the Mint. Collectors could also purchase as many coins as they wanted, since there were no household buying restrictions.

This is the sixth year that the U.S. Mint has struck Proof Gold Buffalos. This year, the Mint only struck one ounce Proof Gold Buffalos in the denomination of $50, unlike in 2006, when the Mint offered four different denominations of $5, $10, $25 and $50.
