The 1866 Proof set was the first to include the five cent nickel piece. It also marked the addition of the motto "In God We Trust" over the eagle on the reverse of the nation's larger silver coinage and gold coins. Even though the war had ended, production of the minor coins for circulation was considerably lower than it had been during the previous few years. Proof mintage however was not affected, and this year's silver mintage of 725 pieces is fairly typical. Somewhat unfortunately for collectors, the gold mintage of 30 pieces was also typical, with the result being that nearly all are quite rare. Our records indicate that a Proof Double Eagle has not been offered at auction in nearly 10 years.
