The 1945-S Inverted S (FS-504) is a rare and sought-after variety of the Mercury Dime, not the Jefferson Nickel. This variety occurs because the "S" mintmark was punched into the coin die upside down. Variety Details Identification: The "S" mintmark on the reverse side (left of the torch) appears upside down. While a normal "S" is symmetrical to the naked eye, the top loop is slightly smaller than the bottom; on the FS-504 variety, this is flipped. Rarity: It is considered a scarce variety compared to the standard 1945-S strike. FB Designation: Collectors often look for examples with "Full Bands" (FB), referring to the horizontal bands on the torch being fully separated, which significantly increases value.
