The 1845 Mint Set was the second of a series of fairly small sets during the mid and late 1840s. As would be the case for the next three years or so, Philadelphia would strike all the Copper and Silver issues, while New Orleans would strike just two of the Silver denominations - the Half Dollar, and then one other - Dimes in 1845, Dollars in 1846, Quarters in 1847 and Half Dimes in 1848. None of the 1845 Silver coins is a major rarity, though by virtue of its low mintage the Dollar is a better date. Not as many gold coins were struck this year as the Charlotte Mint did not issue any coins dated 1845. However you'll find no shortage of tough issues, and the 1845-O Quarter Eagle is the rarest of all the New Orleans Quarter Eagles. With a mintage of only 4000 pieces, it was promoted heavily by veteran Texas dealer B. Max Mehl, and today commands plenty of respect among specialists.
