Capped Bust Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1807-1839)

Along with the early (pre-1816) large cents, Capped Bust Halves have long been a favorite of variety collectors. With dozens of overdates, and variations in the date and lettering, this series offers an excellent balance of difficulty and completability. While at least one collector has completed this set and several others have come within one or two coins, there are two coins in this set that will present a formidable challenge. The 1817/4 (of which there are less than ten known) is the first, while the second is the 1839 Reeded Edge with Small Letters. While others, such as the 1812/1 Large 8 or the 1807 "Bearded Liberty" will prove scarce, this is a set that can be nearly completed with some patience and money.
