1867 Mint Set with Gold

The 1867 Mint Set includes two varieties of the Shield Nickel introduced the previous year; both with, and without the Rays on the reverse. The Philadelphia Half Dime and Dime scarce, both with mintages under 10,000 pieces, but they remain affordable due to a fair number of each set aside in Mint State. The 1867-S Quarter is quite elusive in Mint State, with top examples selling in the upper five-figure range. The gold follows a familiar pattern. The smaller denominations are available, but larger denominations (Half Eagle and higher) are tough in high grade. The "S" mint Half Eagles and Eagles are unknown in Mint State, while the Double Eagle is available in very low MS grades. Perhaps some lie at the bottom of the ocean.
