8 Reales Numismatics

Description:

8 Reales Madness Collection is the result of years of obsession, study, and pursuit — a competitive, research-driven attempt to capture the full diversity of Mexico City-minted 8 Reales coins issued under Spanish crown authority from 1772 through independence in 1821. The focus is not simply on date and type, but on varieties: overdates, assayer changes, engraving styles, and transitional issues that make this one of the richest and most complex series in the Spanish Colonial numismatic landscape.
Where many collectors are content with a date-and-mint set, this registry aims higher — to represent every known and newly discovered variety struck at the Mexico City mint across the reigns of Charles III, Charles IV, and Ferdinand VII. Every coin tells a story — of policy shifts, war, reform, artistry, and survivorship — and each variety is a window into that past.

This is a working set — still growing, refining, and upgrading — with each addition carefully chosen not just for grade, but for its place in the broader historical and numismatic narrative.

Goals of the Set:

● Discover, document and display every date, assayer, and variety Portrait 8 Reales from Mexico City
● Prioritize eye appeal and provenance alongside technical grade.
● Encourage greater collector awareness and appreciation for the complexity of Mexican portrait 8 Reales.
● Eventually create the most complete and high-grade set of its kind.

This set is dedicated to fellow collectors who believe the hunt never ends — and that every coin has something to teach us.

EL VERDUGO - I'm still pretty far away from "complete" but I've been collecting 8 Reales for about 13 years now.
