Gold Dollar Type Set, Proof (1849-1889)
As Proof coins were not widely distributed prior to around 1858, examples of the Types 1 and 2 $1 Gold piece are few and far between. Estimates for the number of proofs made in any given year are all in the single digits, and in fact, the total PCGS population for the Type One in Proof stands at one. The Type Two is not much better with a total PCGS population of only a few pieces. The only one readily available in Proof is the Type Three, and one coin does not a set make.
