1835 Mint Set with Major Varieties

The 1835 Mint Set would mark the last appearance of the Half Cent until 1849. It would also mark the beginning of the transitional head styles which over the next four years, would transform the cent from the older "Coronet" or "Matron" style to the "Braided Hair" style which would run from 1839 to 1857. The Capped Bust silver coinage consisted of a Half Dime, Dime, Quarter and Half, and mintages of all were very high for the period allowing for completion of this set with relative ease. Both the Cent and Half Dime featured a few varieties this year. The Cent featured obverse differences in the size of the "8" in the date and the stars, as well as the first "transitional head" of 1836 style. The Half dimes had variations in both the size of the date, and the size of the "5C" at the bottom of the reverse. None of these varieties are extremely tough, and only those seeking the very highest graded pieces will encounter any financial obstacles.
