While the 1843 Mint Set contains no major rarities, collectors will find the 1843-O Dime to be challenging above XF. Similarly, a Mint State 1843-O Quarter will also take a bit of time and patience. Nearly all the other coins in the set are fairly available (understanding that no silver coins from this period can really be called "common.") The 1840s and 1850s were the heyday of the Southern Branch Mints, and Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans all struck both Quarter and Half Eagles this year. Not surprisingly, the "C" and "D" mints are the expensive ones in most grades, though in Mint State, all gold from this period gets rather costly.
