The nine-piece Mint Set for 1844 contains a scarce dime, nicknamed the "Little Orphan Annie" by promoter Frank C. Ross. In reality, the 1846 is scarcer in all grades, but the "fame" and consequently demand and higher values fell to the 1844. None of the other coins in this set are particularly rare, but a high-grade Seated Dollar will not be inexpensive. Adding the nine gold issues for 1844 doubles the size of the set but ups the price of admission by far more than that. Philadelphia struck very few Quarter Eagles and Eagles this year, so they often rival the scarcity and prices of the typical gold rarities of the period – the Charlotte and Dahlonega Quarter and Half Eagles. In Mint State, nearly all of these issues are tough, but the Philadelphia Eagles are nearly impossible.
