1847 Mint Set with Gold

Like the preceding sets, the 1847 set is small, with only eight pieces required for completion. While Philadelphia struck the copper and all silver denominations, Quarters and Halves were also struck in New Orleans. The mint workers in New Orleans remained busy throughout the year however, producing a good number of both denominations. The branch mints were busy this year striking some ten different gold issues. Quarter and Half Eagles were struck both in Philadelphia and all three branches, (C, D and O) and Eagles were struck in New Orleans as well. Of these, the 1847-O Half Eagle will prove the most challenging. It is in fact the rarest New Orleans Half Eagle, and is almost unknown in Mint State.
