Like the three sets that preceded it, the 1848 Copper and Silver Mint Set is also fairly small, consisting of only 8 coins. All six denominations were struck in Philadelphia, while the Half Dime and Half Dollar were also made in New Orleans. The New Orleans issues were struck in good quantity, so they are quite available. As there are no scarce coins, this is a very completable set. Even when the gold is included, the set remains one of the more completable sets of the period, albeit at a much higher price. Virtually all gold prior to the 1890s is scarce, particularly so in high grade. As one might expect, it will be the branch mint issues in Mint State that will be difficult, and in the case of the 1848-C Half Eagle, almost impossible.
