The 1860 Mint Set was the last full year of production before the Civil War. For the silver coinage, both New Orleans and San Francisco were striking coins in addition to the main mint in Philadelphia. Of these branch mint issues the 1860-O Dime and the 1860-S Quarter will be the challenges. In fact, PCGS has graded only one 1860-S Quarter above XF-45, and no 1860-O Dimes have been graded Mint State, so they are both significant condition rarities. Some eighteen gold issues were struck this year, with output from five mints. All six denominations were struck in Philadelphia and San Francisco, while Charlotte and Dahlonega focused on the smaller denominations (Half Eagles and below) while New Orleans struck the larger denominations (Eagles and Double Eagles). Few of these issues could be called "common" but the more significant rarities this year include the 1860-D Dollar, the 1860-C Quarter Eagle, the 1860-S $3, the 1860-S Eagle and 1860-O Double Eagle.
