The Mint Set for 1871 is defined by four very rare coins. To no one's surprise, they all bear the small letters "CC" on the reverse. In its second year of operation, the Carson City Mint produced only a tiny fraction of the output of the larger mints in Philadelphia and San Francisco, and nearly all the coins went into circulation. Fewer than half a dozen Mint State examples of each exist, and even circulated pieces are few and far between. The Dime, Quarter and Dollar are mid-four figure coins, even in Good-6! If the "CC" silver isn't enough of a challenge, you'll find it in the gold. The '71-CC $20, like most of the "CC" $20s, is rare. Mid-five figures circulated, it approaches half a million in MS-64. Likewise the Eagle and Half Eagle are extremely tough coins, and impossibly so in Mint State. As usual, Philadelphia minted very few Half Eagles and Eagles and values reflect that fact.
