The humble Indian Cent is the star of the show this year, as the 852,000 mintage was far below average for cent coinage during this period. Excluding varieties, it is the undisputed key to this popular series. The other denominations have no major rarities, although the 1877-CC Trade dollar is scarce. No nickels would be struck for circulation this year, or the next. Adding the gold coins doubles the size of this set to 26 pieces, and like most years during this period, rarities abound, particularly in the "CC" mint issues. The Half Eagle, Eagle and Double Eagle from Carson City are all rare, prohibitively so in Mint State. The Philadelphia Mint this year struck only 797 Eagles, continuing a string of extremely low output years.
