1879 Mint Set with Gold

The 1879 Mint set is interesting in several ways. First off, due to the massive production of Morgan Dollars, coinage of minor silver coins (Quarters and Halves) would be severely curtailed for the next dozen years or so. Further, mintage of these coins would be confined almost exclusively to the main mint in Philadelphia. The 1879-CC Morgan is a key date, and top quality examples are not cheap. The 79-O is scarce in high grade, but not rare by any means. The Nickel this year is also scarce, but not extremely expensive. Proofs are cheaper than Mint State pieces, so beware of impaired Proofs being offered as MS examples. There were a lot of gold coins struck this year (15). While there are a couple of tough Morgan Dollars, they pale in comparison to the Double Eagles. Both the 1879-CC and 1879-O $20s are five figure coins even in high circulated grades, and almost unobtainable at any price in Mint State. In fact, the 79-O is represented by a single Mint State example on the PCGS pop report. The 1879-O and CC Eagles are also extremely tough, due to minuscule original mintages. PCGS has not yet graded a MS 1879-CC Eagle. When you include the gold, this is one of the tougher Mint Sets to assemble.
