1886 Mint Set with Gold

The silver coins in the 1886 Mint Set include a major condition rarity in the Morgan Dollar issue; the 1886-O. Like many Morgan Dollars, it is a common coin in low grade, but the price quickly goes exponential once you enter the higher Mint State grades. Most are poorly struck, and despite the rather generous mintage of some 10.7 million pieces, quantities never surfaced in the mid 20th century like many other dates. The Quarter and Half, while struck only in tiny quantities of 5,000 pieces each, are not terribly expensive, though the difference in value between circulated and uncirculated pieces is not large. The Nickel this year (like the previous year) is a key date, and while not prohibitively expensive, is worth considerably more than most of the other dates in the series. The gold presents a major challenge; which is the lone Double Eagle, the 1886-P. With only 1000 pieces struck, it is a mid-five figure coin in circulated condition, and soars into six-figures in Mint State.
