About This Set: In 1894, three thousand Pullman Palace Car Company workers go on a "wildcat" strike in Illinois, setting the stage for Federal government intervention in the private sector to settle the strike. William Kennedy Dickson receives a patent for motion picture film. Russian Tsar Alexander III is succeeded by his son Nicholas II. The start of the first Sino-Japanese War.

In 1894 the Supreme Court continued defining the constitutional limits of federal and state power. In Scott v. McNeal, the Court reaffirmed that due process requires lawful jurisdiction before government may deprive a citizen of property. During the same year the Court heard arguments in United States v. E. C. Knight Co., a case that would soon reshape Commerce Clause jurisprudence and limit federal antitrust enforcement.
